Creating drop shadows and highlight effects is made easy by saving selected areas as channels in Photoshop. Using channel outlines to re-select and make partial de-selection leaves appropriate area ready for blur or level changes until the desired look is achieved. Settings can be saved as an "action" script to repeat the steps precisely on other elements of the design.
